Human beings have irreversibly upset the balance of nature and, as a result, the world is facing the greatest risk of global warming, deforestation, habitat loss, pollution and extinction of species to name a few. As the global ecological awareness grows, Earth Day is now an annual event when many events are held globally to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This year, Earth Day is celebrated on Sunday 22 April with the theme of “Protect Our Species”. More than 1 billion people in 192 countries will come together to save our planet and protect endangered species.
IHG Earth Week
As an extension of Earth Day, IHG hotels and corporate employees celebrate IHG Earth Week from April 21st to April 28th. A whole week is dedicated to raise awareness about the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and water use – two big focus areas for IHG as part of our new Responsible Business targets.
IHG Earth Week provides the chance for IHG hotels to learn best practices about how to save money on utilities, as well as trainings on the IHG Green Engage system, sustainability initiatives, activities, competitions and sustainable fun. Our colleagues worldwide are certainly up for the challenges, taking action to do their part to support planet Earth. One of our neighbours – InterContinental Tangshan and InterContinental Foshan in China promote cycling as a more eco-friendly way of commute to work; while colleagues in InterContinental Fiji Resort have been planting new corals on nearby reefs to fight the destruction of beautiful coral reefs around this Oceania country.

InterContinental Hanoi Landmark72’s Contributions
At InterContinental Hanoi Landmark72, sustainability has been well incorporated in our daily operation, from reducing paper and plastic waste in meetings and conferences, to installing energy-efficient technologies around the hotel. This year, we will kick off IHG Earth Week with the Go Green Tour where all departments are taught about IHG’s Green Solutions while visiting the heart of house spaces including the machine room. Other key activities include collecting old batteries and light bulbs for safe recycling; decorating our workspaces with the colour green; and spreading influences on social media by sharing our IHG Earth Week incentives and activities. To spice up the challenge, creative employees are challenged in our Recycled Art Competition with valuable prizes, which aims to raise awareness for the 5 R’s: refuse, reduce, reuse, rot, recycle.
